The Good Felt x Jaggery: Textile Waste to Handcrafted Products

January 31, 2024

Repurposing old sarees into dresses, transforming worn-out jeans into bags, and other upcycling practices have become familiar ways to embrace sustainable fashion. Despite these efforts, the fashion industry still generates a staggering 92 million tons of textile waste annually, with a mere 12% being recycled. This substantial amount often ends up in landfills, contributing to long-lasting environmental harm and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Good Felt, a venture by Enviu operating in India, offers an innovative local solution. Its goal is to convert post-consumer textile waste into eco-friendly felt products. The company has devised a unique process for transforming post-consumer textile waste into top-quality non-woven fabric sheets. In collaboration with Jaggery: Reimagining Waste, they have introduced remarkable bags made from felt sheets and repurposed seat belts, giving new life to textile waste.

“We’re excited to launch these distinctive products crafted from upcycled textile waste transformed into felt sheets. By turning waste into premium materials and forming partnerships with exceptional brands like Jaggery, we are pioneering solutions to transform waste into value.”

This innovative approach addresses the textile waste crisis and promotes sustainable and fashionable products, setting a positive example for the industry.

Our Journey from Waste to Wow with 3Ps

Planet

The Good Felt presents an innovative solution by transforming post-consumer waste, often disregarded by recyclers due to its low standing in the waste hierarchy, including cotton, poly blends, and multi-coloured clothes, into eco-friendly non-woven fabric sheets. These felt sheets are entirely recyclable and free from contaminants, offering a superior alternative to conventional downcycled options.

People

The collaboration between The Good Felt and Jaggery creates dignified jobs and better working conditions, working closely with waste pickers. Each stitch weaves a connection between waste workers, creative clusters, and skilled artisans in Delhi NCR, fostering dignified work, vibrant communities, planet preservation, and economic growth.

Partnership

The key to The Good Felt’s success lies in its strategic partnerships. Collaborating with KayGee Enterprise, a textile recycling centre in Panipat, the company engages in joint research and development efforts to produce premium quality felt. Noteworthy alliances, such as those with H&M’s in-store waste collection and Fashion for Good, Uptex, further showcase The Good Felt’s commitment to making a positive impact

Reimagining The Good Felt

The Felt sheets are then turned into premium products by an innovative brand called Jaggery: Reimagining Waste. The brand is known for creating edgy ecomodernist commuter gear that diverts metric tons of waste from the landfills of India and, in the process, creates circular jobs for underserved communities.

Gautam Malik, Founder at Jaggery states:

“These designs aren’t just about upcycling materials, they’re about honouring the stories these materials carry, giving them a new chapter in their journey.”

The Good Collection, born from forgotten materials, is a testament to the transformative synergy of upcycling and recycling. Crafting limited edition circular bags, it ingeniously combines textile waste felt with rescued car seat belts and ex-army parachutes, giving each piece a unique allure.
